I suggested my son watch the Discovery Channel
for his TV time instead of Nick Jr. Anyway, he says, "I don't WANT to
watch Discovery Channel--it's BORING!"
I told him I thought it was interesting and left it at that. Then he
goes off and comes back about 15 minutes later and tells me some scientific fact
about outer space and says, "I learned that on the Discovery Channel!" I believe that, for my ds anyway,
he needs to feel like he has some sort of say in what we learn and how we learn
it.

There are days...
There have been days when I, too, am thinking,
"I don't know if I can do this anymore!" But then I back off,
regroup, and try another approach.

Books by Peggy Kaye
We’ve had a lot of luck with the Games ForReading and Games For Writing (two separate books) series by Peggy Kaye. There
are more in the series- Games for Math and Games for Learning, which we have
not tried yet. When we play, my kids
don't know they're doing homework.

5 year old lost his dog
Oh wow, a 5 year old who has been through a very
traumatic event and if that’s not enough, lost his best friend. Yes, by all
means, take it easy, enjoy each others company, go to library story hour, go
for nature walks, hang out, make stuff, and read aloud to him a lot with a big
bowl of popcorn sitting on his lap. You are so right to make your focus be
making him feel safe again and be able to trust.

Sending him to school won't solve your problem
I put my child in school for not participating
with homeschooling and now he's just not participating in school and *I* have
added pressure of trying to get his homework completed for his teacher and he
is just refusing to do it.
